Abstract
Background/Aims: The aims of this study were to investigate whether broccoli sprout extract containing sulforaphane (BSES) has the inhibitory effect on H. pylori infection, and anti-oxidative effect on gastric mucosal damage. Methods: A total of 79 subjects included in 31 H. pylori (+⁢) BSES, 24 H. pylori (-) BSES, and 24 H. pylori (+⁢) placebo group. C13-urea breath test and gastroscopy were performed before and after treatment. The concentration of ammonia was measured in gastric juice aspirate. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (R-GSH) concentrations in gastric corpus mucosa were measured by ELISA. Results: H. pylori (+⁢) BSES group showed no significant changes in delta UBT values and gastric juice ammonia concentration before and after treatment. The mucosal MDA concentrations were significantly reduced after BSES treatment in both H. pylori (+⁢) and H. pylori (-) subjects. R-GSH concentrations were significantly decreased after BSES treatment in the only H. pylori (⁢+) BSES group (p<0.05). However, R-GSH concentrations between before and after treatment were not different significantly between BSES group with or without H. pylori infection and placebo group (p=0.178). Conclusions: BSES has no effect on eradication or inhibition of H. pylori infection in human stomach. BSES may prevent lipid peroxidation in gastric mucosa and may play a role in the cytoprotection in H. pylori-induced gastritis.
