Medical Insurance and Diagnosis and Treatment of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Abstract

Since its inception in 1977 in Korea, medical insurance has undergone changes and finally launched itself as a current health insurance system. Advances of medical science have also introduced various methods of diagnosis and treatment which are now clinically utilized after basic and clinical research. The recently-discovered H. pylori is a shining example of such development. Based on a variety of researches, the method of diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori are now developed and applied clinically. But it's cost is not completely covered yet in Korea's insurance system. In terms of indication of treatment, particularly, only a patient with active peptic ulcer can be eligible to the insurance coverage. The coverage should be expanded to provide patients with high quality medical services in the years to come. (Korean J Helicobacter Res Prac 2001;1:56-59)
