Abstract |
Background/Aim: Rapid urease tests are worldwide used for the detection of H. pylori infection. We performed this study to estimate the influence of number of gastroscopic biopsy specimens, and different urea concentration for diagnosis of H. pylori by rapid urease test. Methods: Multiple gastroscopic antral biopsies were performed in 181 consecutive patients with untreated antisecretory drugs. The urea concentration comparison test was performed using 2% urea broth with one piece of specimen, 6% urea broth with one piece of specimen (66 patients), and the number of specimen comparison test was performed using 2% urea broth with one piece of specimen, 2% urea broth with 3 piece of specimen (115 patients). The positivity of above mentioned groups were compared. Results: The urea concentration comparision test: positive patients of one specimen with 2% urea borth/6% urea borth within 1 hour is 37/38 (56.0/57.5%), 6 hour; 40/44 (60.9/66.6%), 24 hour; 47/50 (71.2/75.8%), and 48 hour 47/50 (71.2/75.8%), respectively. The number of specimen comparison test: positive patients of the one specimen with 2% urea broth/the three specimens with 2% urea broth within 1hour is 68/67 (59.1/58.2%), 6 hour 71/72 (61.7/62.6%), 24 hour 90/90 (78.2/ 78.2%), and final 48 hour 90/90 (78.2/78.2%), respectively. There was no any additional positively changed urea broth after 24 hour observation. Conclusions: There was no significant difference in positivity between the two test groups. So, we suggest one specimen with 2% urea broth and 24 hr observation may be sufficient as a urease test. (The Korean Journal of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research 2004;4:25-29) |
