Abstract |
Gastritis cystica profunda is usually characterized by hyperplasic and cystic dilatation of gastric gland with submucosal invasion. These lesions have been found mainly at the site of gastroenterostomy. Macroscopically, gastritis cystica profunda may present not only as a submucosal tumor or polyp, but also as a giant gastric mucosal fold. We experienced a case of gastritis cystica profunda that didn't involve any gastric surgery. A 28-year-old woman attended the hospital because of epigastric pain. Endoscopic examination revealed a pedunculated polyp approximately 2 cm in diameter in the highbody of the stomach. Biopsy specimens from the surface of the polyp revealed only chronic gastritis. She had no history of gastrectomy or gastroenterostomy. After polypectomy, microscopy demonstrated numerous, small-to-large submucosal cysts, and the overlying mucosa was thin, which was consistent with gastritis cystica profunda. We present a case of gastritis cystica profunda which was diagnosed and treated by endoscopic polypectomy. (The Korean Journal of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research 2008;8:54-57) |
